PNOC

TAGUIG CITY, Metro Manila—In support of the government’s long-term goal of ensuring a secure and sustainable energy future, PNOC is strengthening its involvement in the country’s nuclear energy initiatives through participation in national capacity-building programs and forums.

On October 27-29, 2025, the company’s Business Research and Development Department and Project Management Department participated in the third leg of the Nuclear Energy Awareness Training. Organized by the Nuclear Energy Program Inter-Agency Committee (NEP-IAC) through the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute, the three-day training gathered over 150 energy professionals and representatives from universities, the private sector, civil society, and government.

The session covered the fundamentals of the Philippine Nuclear Energy Program (PNEP), human resource development strategies, radiation protection, nuclear safety and security, regulatory frameworks, and safeguards. The training is part of the government’s continuing efforts to build a skilled and knowledgeable workforce that will support the integration of nuclear energy into the Philippine energy mix.

Under the Philippine Energy Plan 2023-2050, the PNEP envisions introducing a nuclear power capacity of at least 1,200 megawatts (MW) by 2032, expanding to 2,400 MW by 2035, and reaching 4,800 MW by 2050.

Patrick T. Aquino, Energy Utilization Management Bureau Director of the Department of Energy and NEP-IAC Technical Secretariat Head, underscored the importance of capacity-building initiatives in achieving these milestones.

We have a vast pool of scientists, engineers, safety experts, and other professionals who can play a pivotal role in advancing one of the most ambitious undertakings of our generation. We remain deeply committed to harnessing and empowering our future nuclear professionals in pursuit of a safe, reliable, and clean energy future for the country,” he said.

Director Aquino further highlighted that the NEP-IAC aims to transition from preparatory activities to implementation-ready frameworks by 2026 to keep the country on track to produce its first nuclear power by 2032.

Earlier in October, PNOC officials, including President and CEO Ma. Cristina Sheila C. Cabaraban and Senior Vice President for Energy Business Atty. Graciela M. Barleta also attended the second Philippine International Nuclear Supply Chain Forum 2025. The high-level forum brought together global nuclear technology leaders, policymakers, regulators, and development partners to exchange insights on building a robust and resilient nuclear ecosystem for the Philippines.

PNOC’s active involvement in the country’s nuclear energy initiatives underscores its strategic role in advancing energy development in collaboration with the private sector and other government agencies.
