The PNOC, in collaboration with the University of the Philippines Society of Proactive Advocates for Research and Knowledge on Energy, AI, and Technology (UP SPARK), organized the latest learning session under its WATT’s UP initiative titled ESCO 101: Driving Energy Efficiency and Conservation through Innovative Services held on April 28, 2025. The online event gathered around 60 students from various academic institutions to promote greater awareness and understanding of energy efficiency and conservation (EEC).

In her opening remarks, PNOC Strategy Management Office Officer-in-Charge Helen M. Alfonso highlighted the company’s sustainability-driven projects and emphasized the importance of youth engagement in achieving national energy goals. “We hope today’s session will not only broaden your understanding of energy efficiency, but also inspire you to become ambassadors of EEC in your respective households, schools, and communities,” she noted.

The session’s featured speaker, Mr. Jose Patrick IV V. Andaya of the PNOC’s Business Research and Development Department, provided a comprehensive overview of the EEC Act (RA 11285). His discussion covered responsible energy use policies, fiscal incentives, energy audit practices, and the Government Energy Management Program (GEMP). He also introduced ISO 50001:2018, highlighting its Plan-Do-Check-Act framework as a tool for continuous improvement in energy performance.

Andaya further emphasized that ESCOs enable institutions to reduce energy use without large capital investments, and shared household energy-saving tips such as unplugging appliances, optimizing thermostat settings, and regular maintenance.

PNOC President and CEO Oliver B. Butalid concluded the session by underscoring the role of WATT’s UP in shaping future energy leaders. He noted that addressing today’s energy challenges requires a collective understanding of policy, innovation, and market trends. He also encouraged continued student involvement and reaffirmed PNOC’s support for educational partnerships and youth-led energy initiatives.

Students from the University of the Philippines, De La Salle University, Mapúa University-Makati, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Technological University of the Philippines, Technological Institute of the Philippines, Tarlac State University, and several public high schools participated in the session.

In their feedback, participants shared how the event deepened their understanding of pressing energy challenges and emphasized the practical role individuals can play in addressing them. Many found the discussion on simple, everyday actions impactful, as it demonstrated how small behavioral changes can collectively contribute to national energy goals. Others appreciated the session’s emphasis on collaboration, technology-driven solutions, and performance-based strategies, noting that these made the vision of a sustainable future feel both attainable and inclusive.

The WATT’s UP initiative is PNOC’s platform aimed at building energy sector awareness, particularly among the youth, through innovative communication activities.
